The Fun Bridge Group meets in the Heritage Room every Friday afternoon, year round, from 1:00 to 3:30 p.m. Many eager bridge players arrive as early as 12:30 p.m. and look forward to an afternoon of fun and relaxation.
There is no need to come with a partner – simply go to the first table that has an empty space for you. We do change partners and tables every half hour. We do not keep score and most of us avoid all the latest “twists” that might be favoured by pairs who play together regularly. We frequently have pairs who bid and make Slam or Grand Slam bids, but most of us are happy to play a challenging game among friends.
Each participant in the Fun Bridge Group pays a weekly drop-in fee of $2.00: $1.25 goes for facility use, and the remaining 75 cents goes towards purchasing the snacks served each week.
Each month one or two members volunteer to be the Hospitality Convener(s), and they are responsible for shopping and preparing delicious snacks, as well as setting up and cleaning up at each Friday gathering. Other members help by preparing the tables for the afternoon and later by putting the cards, etc., safely in the cupboards. We also have a 50/50 draw which supports the Hospitality Table and the Christmas and spring luncheons and the many birthday celebrations of our members.
Many of our members have been coming out for years. Some of our members have only recently qualified to become members of the Seniors Centre and we have many who are nonagenarians and one centenarian – but everyone seems to enjoy each other’s company and the tales that they tell! Some of our members are snowbirds and we don’t see them for months. Some members are skiers, cottagers, travellers – they always know they are welcome back to the Fun Bridge Group on Friday afternoons.
